Protest in Support of Birja Mafia Illuminated by Protesters’ Mobile Phones

Protesters held a demonstration in support of satirical hip hop group Birja Marfia in the evening of May 10th on Rustaveli avenue in Tbilisi. The two group members were arrested last week and charged with possession of the drug MDMA; they potentially face prison sentences of eight to 20 years.

The street lights on Rustaveli avenue were off during the demonstration, leaving the street dark. Protesters instead lit up their mobile phones; many of the protesters believe the government turned the street lights off to deter their march.
