Singers, Artists and Sportsmen to Run in the Parliamentary Elections

Candidates for Georgia’s 2016 parliamentary elections include famous artists, singers and sportsmen. Nominees for the Georgian Dream (GD) party who will vie for majoritarian seats in parliament on October 8th include:

  • Zaza Khutsishvili, frontman of the Vakis Parki rock band, who is set to run in Vake’s Precinct No.3

  • Bidzina Gegidze, a former rugby player will represent the Georgian Dream in Precinct No.2 in Vake;

  • Zaza Papuashvili, a theater actor, is running for the party in Precinct No.15 in Didube.

  • Mikheil Kavelashvili,  a former footballer,  has been nominated by the Georgian Dream as a majoritarian MP candidate in Precinct No.18 in Nadzaladevi

  • Another footballer and president of the Georgian Football federation, Levan Kobiashvili, will stand for the party in Precinct No.21 in Gldani

  • Shota Khabareli, Georgian judoka, is set to run in Precinct No.13 in Samegrelo

The Georgian Dream is not the only party which has fielded famous singers, artists and sportsmen. The United National Movement (UNM) has nominated the actor and orchestral conductor Irakli Cholokashvili as a majoritarian MP candidate in District No.14 in Chugureti.

Paata Burchuladze, a Georgian opera singer is head of the political party "State for People". While pro-Russian party, "The Patriots Alliance" named the famous Georgian singer Zura Khachidze as its majoritarian MP candidate in Borjomi and Aspindza.

NPC-Girchi has announced that writer and musician Toresa Mossy will stand as a the party’s majoritarian candidate in Telavi. 


This is not the first time that famous singers and sportsmen have run as majoritarian MP candidates. A number of well-known artists and musicians were among those elected in the 2012 parliamentary elections.

MP from Georgian Dream Ioseb Jachvliani, actor, is majoritarian MP in Gldani. Tamaz Japaridze, also an actor, is member of parliament from the Georgian Dream. Alesander Kantaraia, artist, is majoritarian MP in Isani. Zaza papuashvili, theatre actor, also from the GD and the artist Paata Baratashvili, Zurab Zviadauri, former Judoka is a member of GD, Gogi Kavtaradze is an actor from GD.  

Zaza Kedelashvili is Geogian former Judoka, currently a MP from the United National movement.

On August 14th 2013, then prime minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili stated that majority of MPs have no work experience.

“David Usupashvili (Chairperson of Parliament of Georgia) reminds me every day not to choose famous actors to be members of parliament. They should have experience in working with legislation.”- said Bidzina Ivanishvili during an interview with local media representatives.
