Pope Francis held a mass today in the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi which was attended by the President of Georgia, the First Lady as well as representatives of the executive and legislative branches of the government. Thousands of Catholics took part as did people of other faiths.
During the mass the Pope said: “There are a lot of people suffering, facing oppression and injustice who are filled with woe. Their hearts need soothed, god’s comfort. This won’t be able to stop their suffering entirely, but it will fill them with the power of love...It is the main responsibility of the church to bestow god’s love on people.”
In the afternoon the Pope met with monks, nuns and priests at the Catholicum Cathedralis de Domina Virgo Maria Tphilisensis before travelling to Svetitskhoveli in Mtskheta to meet with the Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church Ilia II.
