The Executive Secretary of the Georgian Dream Irakli Kobakhidze commented on the attempted assassination of UNM Leader Givi Targamadze. At a special briefing he said: “we have reasons to doubt that this was a political act”.
“It’s alarming that straight after the incident the United National Movement began to accuse the government and the Georgian Dream. We have to respond to these allegations. Yesterday’s incident showed us that there are people who would do anything for power. We want these people to put their criminal intentions aside and to stop hindering the democratic process. Only law enforcement authorities can confirm whether or not this incident was indeed a criminal act. We have reasons to doubt that this was a political act” - says Kobakhidze
Irakli Kobakhidze also encouraged national and international observers to pay close attention to the UNM’s meeting in Tbilisi today, which is scheduled to start at 16:00. Kobakhidze claimed that there were “some risks.”
“There are some risks, and we’ve been talking about this for a long time. We encourage the national and international observers to pay close attention to today’s meeting, and to pay close attention over the course of the next three days so as to prevent and attempts to destabilize the election process or provoke unrest. We hope that the law enforcement authorities will soon find out who committed this crime and why.” Said Kobakhidze
His statement comes after the car of one of the UNM’s leaders exploded in central Tbilisi, close to Freedom Square. MP Givi Targamadze and his driver were in the vehicle at the time, and sustained only minor injuries. Five passers-by were injured and hospitalized. The police are investigating the incident as an attempted assassination.
