Images went viral on social media on November 29 of well-known statues in Tbilisi wearing surgical masks.

Tabula received an anonymous letter that ‘oxygen ninjas’ are behind the protest.

The anonymous group of activists demand clean air in the city and say that this is only the beginning. It is not yet known who exactly is behind the campaign.

Tbilisi Vice Mayor, Irakli Mkhaladze said the protest was ‘insulting the statues’ and that the Ministry of Internal Affairs has opened an investigation.

According to a 2016 report of the International Energy Agency, Georgia ranks number one in terms of a mortality rate attributed to air pollution.
