Swiss President Doris Leuthard started an official visit to Georgia on December 3. Leuthard has met with President Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, and Parliament Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze.

President Margvelashvili assessed Leuthard’s visit as a great occasion to discuss prospects for realizing Georgia and Switzerland’s full potentials, the president’s administration reported. The president said that Georgia and Switzerland's 25-years of diplomatic relations have developed successfully.

The statement says that Margvelashvili has briefed Swiss President Leuthard on Georgia-Russia relations and thanked her for Switzerland’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“It is important that Switzerland, as a mediator between Georgia and Russia, to have objective information on the environment of Georgia’s occupied territories. The President of Georgia has once again expressed his concern over the Russian occupation and annexation of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region. The so-called agreements signed by Russia with Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region are clear indicators of annexation,” the statement from the president’s administration says.

During the meeting with Prime Minister Kvirikashvili the two sides discussed potential spaces of development of cooperation between the two countries.

“We are very glad and welcome the rising bilateral connections between Switzerland and Georgia. We are very glad to notice also the increasing trade and investments, and it is something we are committed to build a full-fledged bilateral partnership with your country. I am very grateful that you promised to visit and now you are here in Georgia,” reads the press statement issued by the Government of Georgia.

In response, Leuthard told Kvirikashvili that during this visit to Georgia she and her delegation “will look further what we can improve in our bilateral relations.”

Leuthard also met with parliamentary chairman Kobakhidze. According to the the press statement issued by the Parliament of Georgia, Leuthard promised Kobakhidze to continue development programs as part of cooperation with Georgia. The programs will be mainly oriented on the agricultural sector and towards supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises.
