CRRC Poll: Russia Considered Main Enemy for 40% of Georgians

The Caucasus Research Resource Center (CRRC) - Georgia published the results of its annual Caucasus Barometer poll which assesses social-economic and political attitudes in Georgia.

According to the poll, 40% of Georgians consider Russia to be the major enemy of the country. To the same question, 27% responded that they don’t know. 3% consider Turkey to be Georgia’s main enemy, and 3% - the US. 21% of the pollees thinks that none of the listed countries are Georgia’s enemies.

1% of respondents say all of the countries listed are Georgia’s enemy. 4% refused to answer the question.

In regards to Georgia’s main friends, the breakdown is:

  • The US - 25%
  • Azerbaijan - 7%
  • Ukraine - 7%
  • Turkey - 6%
  • Russia - 6%
  • Armenia - 2%
  • Other - 5%
  • None - 17%
  • Don’t know- 24%
  • Refuse to Answer - 2%

The poll also touched upon Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration with question such as whether Georgians support EU and NATO membership.

16% of Georgians fully support EU and NATO membership, whereas 25% mainly supports NATO membership. 20% is against it, and out of those, 12% doesn’t think Georgia should be in any alliance at all. 8% mainly disagrees with NATO membership.

26% of the pollees stated that they partially agree with NATO membership and partially not. 13% refuse to answer or doesn’t know the answer to the question.

45% of the pollees support EU membership; out of those, 17% fully supports, whereas 28% mainly supports. The percentage of individuals who disagree with EU membership amounted to 14%, whereas people who partially agree and partially don’t - 28%. 13% doesn’t know or refuses to answer.

In regards to the Russia-led Eurasian Union, 26% doesn’t support Georgia’s membership in that alliance at all, 12% mainly doesn’t support, and 24% partially agrees, partially doesn’t. 7% fully support this notion, whereas 12% mainly support it, and 18% refuse to answer or doesn’t know the answer.

The fieldwork for the research was carried out from September 22, 2017 to October 10th, 2017. 2,379 individuals were polled. The margin of error is 2%.
