PACE President expresses concern over detention of former senior officials


We are concerned over the series of arrests of former senior officials especially at times when the presidential election is nearing in the country, Jean-Claude Mignon, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, told journalists after a meeting with the parliamentary speaker, Davit Usupashvili, in Tbilisi on 29 May.

The PACE president said, the Council of Europe cannot interfere in domestic affairs of Georgia but it does want the trials are held in a transparent and democratic manner. The presumption of innocence must apply to every person, he added.
