Georgian Prime Minister's Special Representative for Relations with Russia, Zurab Abashidze said on 23 September there are "strong guarantees" that Georgia's breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia will not participate in the upcoming Olympic Games in Sochi.
Russia's position as well is that Abkhazia and South Ossetia should not participate in Winter Olympic Games as independent states, Abashidze told reporters.
"By the way, Mr. Ankvab also spoke about this. At least, on none of the websites of the Olympic Committee Abkhazia and South Ossetia are listed as independent participants [of Sochi Olympic Games]. This cannot happen; we cannot let it happen even theoretically. We have heard from our Russian colleagues as well on this issue," Abashidze said.
