US Ambassador Richard Norland met with Davit Bakradze, a presidential candidate from the United National Movement, to congratulate him on the presidential election results, held on 27 October, a statement published on the webpage of the US Embassy on 31 October reads. The results confirmed that the United National Movement (UNM) is the principal opposition party in Georgia today, the statement continues.
According to the US Embassy, "The Ambassador and the UNM political council Chairman agreed on the importance of creative bipartisan cooperation in Parliament and with the Government on addressing the foreign and domestic policy challenges facing the country."
On October 28, Ambassador Norland met with President Mikheil Saakashvili. The US Ambassador congratulated Saakashvili "on peaceful elections, on the progress Georgia made in many areas during his term in office, and on the upcoming political transition."
