Georgian fencer Teodora Kakhiani won the 2017 European Championship in sword fencing in Tbilisi, Georgia on June 12th. Ranked 202nd in the world by the International Fencing Federation (FIE), Kakhiani defeated Italy’s Rossella Gregoria (ranked 13th) with a score of 15-8 in the finals. She is the first Georgian to receive the gold medal at the European Championship in fencing.
22 athletes formed the Georgian team in the tournament, including for both the individual and team competition in sword and rapier fencing.
The leader of the Georgian national team, Sandro Bazadze, who also participated in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, will fight on June 15th.
